A surprisingly compelling book about something you would not even begin to care about. Could not stop reading and NOW all I notice are references to cod in the news and in advertising- they're everywhere... Though they probably shouldn't be!

This book will definitely change your perceptions about the world, always a good thing.

An extremely depressing look at the way that overfishing has depleted the cod stocks around the world, perhaps irreparably. I enjoy Kurlansky's writing most of the time and found the combination of history, fishing details, and politics focused and entertaining. This is a fairly dense narrative, not a lighthearted romp and the ultimate message left me feeling overwhelmingly sad about the destruction of this seemingly indestructible species.
