"The Little Stranger" is a near perfect ghost story, even though there is hardly ever mention of the ghost. Told from the doctor's point of view, rational explanations, or at least the search for them, remain paramount throughout, even while the doctor is himself becoming involved in the haunted family's dilemma. I've come to think of Sarah Waters as writing strong and interesting female characters, so I was somewhat disappointed to realize that this book was told from the perspective of a male doctor. He frequently assesses the women in the book based on their physical appearance and their fashion choices, which seemed very male, but also kind of annoying.

An atmospheric ghost story set in post WWII England around a deteriorating country manor house. The story is told from the point-of-view of a man who grew up in the area and is now a local doctor. Interesting, well-drawn characters. A book that leaves you turning over the characters' choices for awhile after you have finished reading. ...more

This one was hard to star. I think it is quite a masterful book, which stays true to it's narrative form and for that it deserves at least 4 stars. But I dreaded reading it. I think that was a combo of the increasing anxiety that pervades the book combined with how slowly it builds that anxiety. It did manage to completely scare the crap out of me at one point though. ...more
