I wanted something gloriously escapist but grounded in realism, literary and with a strong voice, and I got that all with Tipping the Velvet, yay. I enjoyed reading about a life different from mine in a gazillion ways but felt utterly like a real life, meandering in its plot and strange in its direction, its course dictated by various emotional descents and ascents.
