Okay, so I picked this up right after release because I already knew I enjoyed Novik's work from her earlier books.

But my gosh! This book was amazing and just what I needed! I had no idea it would be so funny! Her other works have had humorous parts, but I'd say were generally more serious or fairytale-esque in tone. I'm both thrilled that I've already read it, and so sad because I'm going to have to wait quite a while for any kind of sequel.

I am really annoyed at GoodReads, which has been assigning every book I read 1 star with no chance of correcting to what I really think of the book. That said,let me go on.

This book is sort of Harry Potter meets Lord of the Flies, without the leavening of the Weasleys. I found myself tensing up and biting my nails and remindinding myself "it's only a book". In other words, I enjoyed the story. ...more

My kids and I loved this book. The story is clever and the protagonist is wonderful. She's bursting with power, but most of it pushing towards evil. She needs a spell for light and gets fire to burn down cities. I loved the conception of this dangerous wizarding world where those with magic are in constant danger from evil forces just waiting to eat them alive.

I can't wait for the next book in this series to be published. We'll definitely be getting that one as soon as it's available.
