This has similar themes to Waiting for Godot (which I read the same day) but is so much more enjoyable. The old man is coming to terms with death and loss while catching and ultimately losing the fish of a lifetime. He's sensitive and it was lovely to spend time in his perspective. His friendship with Santiago is tender and sweet.
The story moves along at a good pace (it's not long, either) and I really, really enjoyed it.

The struggle between an old man and a very big fish. Or... is it the struggle between mankind and nature? I haven't been fishing in a very long time nor am I a big fan of fishing but I feel like going fishing now. For a very short book, it is quite suspenful, full of interesting description of incidents, and brimming with thoughts for the readers to ponder. In short, a powerful book to get you thinking...

This is my latest edition to my "Books literally everyone alive has read except me and which I've been putting off for 2+ decades" list. Even though I knew how it was going to turn out (thanks for that, introduction!), and the fact that it took far too many days to read than 100 pages warranted, I found myself surprised at my emotional investment at the end.

What I liked the most is the scenes where the boy is taking part of the story.
