My love of science combined with my sense of humor, in one book = SCORE!

I admit, I do not have anywhere near the capacity of science and mechanics in general to truly get everything that Mark did in this book...but I could completely appreciate it.

This journey just kept pulling me in, I had to know what was next or what was Mark's next smartass comment :)

Great read that appealed to both sense of adventure and humor.

Wowie, wowie – what a wild ride this book is! The action starts on the first page, and doesn’t let up until the last one. Sci-fi is not a genre I normally read, but I really enjoyed this book. I’ve heard this described as a mashup of the movies, Apollo 13, and Castaway. I agree with that assessment.

Mark Watney is part of the crew sent on a mission to Mars. On the sixth day on Mars, he has an accident, and his crewmates leave him for dead and start their return journey to earth. Mark wakes up to

So, this wasn't actually a good book. The writing was fairly mediocre. The characters, other than the primary protagonist, were mostly interchangeable and lacking in much personality. There wasn't actually much character development despite the ongoing brink-of-survival problem solving. But it was an entertaining read. Mark Watney is left behind on Mars when the rest of his crew has to make an emergency exit and believes Mark has died in a sandstorm. Mark is left to try to find a way to survive and to get in touch with Earth to tell them he's alive and hopefully be rescued. An edge of your seat read. A lot of bad things happen to Mark but the author makes it all very believable and the science understandable. I couldn't put this book down. I had to know what happened next. ...more

So much fun! A botanist/engineer gets accidentally stranded on Mars. He lurches between successes and life threatening accidents. His gallows humor keeps things lively and the science and problem solving that saves him is well explained without getting tedious. This is a time that I broke my usual practice and saw the movie before I read the book. It is one of those rare cases where they compliment and inform each other.
