I was surprised at how accessible and digestible this novel was, based on what I've heard and read about Hesse in general. Though it did give me a few nights of very intense dreams, especially the night I put the book up and went to sleep in the middle of Harry's theater visit.
While I know very little about philosophy, Eastern or Western, and have just a basic understanding of Jung's work, it's easy to see their influence here.

Reread time!
I first read this book as part of an eleventh grade history project that involved putting a book into its historical context. I have a vague recollection that the radio was very symbolic in that essay. The assignment was a bit of a turning point for me - I loved to read but never quite got how we were supposed to analyze books and identify symbols in English class. I could not keep my mind on this book. Maybe it just proves I have a shallow mind, but I got nothing from this. If I had not be reading it for the Seasonal Reading Challenge I would have quit.
