Wow, this book pushed all my emotional buttons. It made me smile, it made me cry, and it made me think about life and death. The story is about two teenagers, Hazel and Augustus, who meet at a Cancer Support Group for kids. Because she has a terminal prognosis that has been held off by a wonder drug, Hazel is afraid to get involved with Gus since she does not want him to be hurt. She says, "I'm a grenade and at some point I'm going to blow up and I would like to minimize the casualties."

At this point, it seems a bit belated to offer praise for this book, but I loved it so much I can't help it. It is actually the first John Green book I've read, even though I've followed the vlogbrothers videos for some time, as well as Crashcourse. First, I'd like to say, the book surpassed my expectations, which were already high because of John Green's insistence in many of his videos that the "Truth resists simplicity." Most books about death wind up being about life. This is certainly the case with this sad and funny book. I think it works more as a love story than it does about a story of cancer. It is less great writing than it is great storytelling. Its ending is wonderful and it has a few lines that are quotable. Hope they do not ruin the film.

I'm quite certain I was near tears for the last 50 pages. Not how I expected it to end. It was quite an adventure, and surprisingly funny at some points, which I think is important in this kind of book. ...more
