Ruso continues his contract as a medic with the 20th legion, this time up on the northern border. Between wild barbarians, jumpy centurions, and his shady housekeeper, he gets dragged again into solving murders.

What to Expect

The novel is set Britannia at the start of Hadrian's reign. Ruso is always reluctant to look at those murder (he's a doctor, dammit, not an investigator!) but since no one else would he feels obliged. Things naturally become much more complicated than anyone expects, and Rus

The second in Downie's Medicus series this story sees Ruso and Tilla heading north to the "frontier." I didn't like this one as much as the first. I think because the protagonist ends up jumping to ideas that seem a bit shaky. Still, I will probably read the next one before making final judgement on the series... ...more

I was expecting to be disappointed with this Roman detective mystery series after having so much fun with Lindsey Davis' Falco series, but the two I have already read are great! I like the characters and the plots. The plots will \ keep you guessing to the end. ...more
