"Nobody can be touched by that much power without being corrupted."

*sigh* The first 100 pages of this book and I was so on board. I loved it. Interesting and odd, it had a slant on the magician story that I was at least intrigued by.

But by about the time of 'welters', I was kind of done. The story got too odd. The pieces just didn't seem to fit together, although you could see an odd connection you hoped the author wouldn't leap to.

Shelves: fantasy

I'm changing my rating to 4.5 stars for this book. My initial enthusiasm was tempered by Grossman's blatant plagarism of the fantasy of Harry Potter, The Hobbit, and Narnia. However, I've changed my mind and decided this works for Grossman. What is wrong with incorporating important literary works into the plot line as long as the final product is admirable? ... Other authors do this with non-fantasy based works all the time.

It is Harry Potter grown up with an edge to it. A little self indulgent and tiresome with the amount of alcohol consumed.

The first half dragged for me. I found myself not caring about the characters and what happened to them. But the second half really picked up and I began to enjoy the story.
