"We always have a choice."

This was a very well done, tough book. A story about love - about the right to love, the pain of loss, the love of a parent, the love of a wife and husband. It's such a tangled web with so many wrong and right answers but even more gray ones. You just never know how things will turn out.

What a moral quandary this book was! I was torn between wanting to finish the book to see how it ends, and not wanting to finish the book because I wasn't sure that I really wanted to know how it was going to end, because there was just no possible way that all parties involved would have a happily ever after. I wasn't thrilled with the ending, but then again, I'm not sure how I would have wanted it to end. Still a great book with a lot of thought-provoking questions. ...more

You have to keep remembering all the bad things." ...more

Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia after fighting in WWI and becomes a lighthouse keeper. While tended the light on Janus Tom gets shore leave in Partaguese where he meets and marries Isabel. There life is tainted by the grief of Isabel's two miscarriages and one stillbirth when a baby and a dead body wash up in a rowboat on the island. Their decision to keep the baby and raise her as their own has far reaching repercussions. A gut twisting story. I could identify with the motives and feelings ...more
