A re-read, to be honest... But then, I read it first back in 1996 or so, so it was like discovering it again. Now I remember why I lugged my old French paperback in my schoolbag for ages, and why it looked like it could've been Pollution's lovely child. (I regret throwing it away in favour of buying a non-translated edition. At the time, moving abroad, it seemed like the reasonable thing to do. It also seems like "reasonable" and "I" don't do well together. -_-)

The world is going to end. On Saturday. This has been long in the making, and was foretold centuries ago by an eccentric woman named Agnes Nutter. You would have known this if you had read her book. Of course, you would have to find a copy of the elusive tome, as only one is still in existence.

Excellent!! This is a re-read as a re-listen. This is the best way to enjoy this book, with this narrator, Martin Jarvis. He is perfect! Yes the book is about the pending end of the world, but it's by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett...I laughed so much. Martin Jarvis enabled this listener to laugh even harder.
So much going on, multitudinous points of view, all pretty much taking place in one small area of England. A story well-told.

This book just didn't work for me. I'm not sure what I expected but I know I didn't get it. I found it mildly amusing at best. Which is far from the reputation it has of being one of the funniest books ever written. I did like that character of Newt though. But then again I have a soft spot for the shy and awkward. He was the only thing I really liked about the story. I'd rate it 1.5 stars.

I have no idea how it took me so long to read this book. It's completely up my alley. Quirky, irreverent, laugh out loud funny (multiple times...I feel so bad for my neighbors). And underneath all the absurdity, there are interesting ideas about good vs. evil, theology, and the like. Really, really fun. I can see myself re-reading this one a lot in the coming years.
