I have seen this frequently cited as one of the all time best fantasy novels for middle grade and young adult readers. I'm afraid I did not feel that way. Half of this book was a road trip novel. We open with Gen in prison for having stolen the royal seal of the King of Sounis. The Magus of Sounis approaches Gen and proposes to him that in return for Gen's freedom, Gen will help the Magus retrieve a mythical lost treasure. After reading the description for this book, I really thought I'd like it a lot better than I did. For most of this book, I was quite bored, and felt like I wanted to skim, but since it isn't that long of a book, I didn't.

There were some parts of the book that were okay. Some parts where I glimpsed that the author could really write some good stuff that kept me engaged as a reader, but for the most part, I didn't really care what happened. I didn't care about the characters. I didn't really und ...more

When I first read this, I must not have been in the proper mood for I found it just so-so. However, I loved book 2, The Queen of Attolia, so I decided to reread this to see if my opinion would change. And it did. I'm not sure if it was because I was more familiar with the dynamics of the characters and countries or if it was a simple thing like me being more in the mood for it, but I found this one almost as good as QofA.
