What Members Thought
This was an interesting idea - based on a whole series of unusual photographs which the author had found, it seemed he weaved a strange story about a group of very peculiar children. The story hung together well, and didn't require too much of a suspension of disbelief, but I did find that at times it was shoehorned a little artificially into the photographs. The edition I read was really lovely to hold, and the photos were interesting to look at but, although this is obviously the first of the

Jacob Portman is a 16 year old living in Florida. Jacob's grandfather Abe has told him wild stories about his youth at a school in Wales. When his grandfather mysteriously dies Jacob and his father travel to Wales to try to find out more about Abe's past. The book uses antique photos throughout that have been "minimally" touched up by the author. I wonder how much photoshop was actually involved. I found the pictures to be distracting and it seemed to me that certain book events occurred only be

Jacob's grandfather has always told magical stories about the home for children he lived in during World War II. He tells of fanciful friends like the girl who could levitate and the invisible boy and of the falcon, who was fond of pipes, who looked after them all. As Jacob got older, he realized that his grandfather's tales were fairy tales and exaggerations that help brighten a frightening time in his grandfather's life. However, as Jacob's grandfather aged, he started to lose his grip on real

What a fun read! As soon as the pictures came up in the books with the grandpa's description I immediately began thinking of the olden circus freakshows. Once the peculiars came into the story I couldn't help but keep thinking this.
I love the whole aspect of this book with the peculiars and the time travel aspect.
Enjoyable and will read the next in the series for sure. ...more

I had trouble maintaining an interest in this, I didn't much like the characters & it just didn't grab me. An interesting idea but I won't bother with the others in the series.

What a fun idea! These pictures are bizarre and apparently are legitimate old photos. Sometimes the author reached a little incorporating them into the story and sometimes the ages made no sense (the subjects of some photos clearly weren’t children) but the overall premise was delightful. I greatly enjoyed it and it got me out of a reading slump.
Appropriate for younger readers but at first I thought it was an adult novel because of the narration.

it was not what I expected. I had hoped for scary but it's more of a fairy tale. cute, but not what I had hoped for.
