Legend is a YA dystopian novel told from the POV's of June and Day. June is a military prodigy being trained in strategy and command for the novel's futuristic government set in the western US. Day is an independent rebel fighting the big-brother regime.

When I picked up this book I really thought I might be a little burned out on dystopias, especially after having just finished UnSouled. So I was surprised at how quickly I fell into this story and kept thinking about it even when I wasn't reading. Lu has created two great characters in Day - a street kid from a hurricane and environmentally ravaged Los Angeles who has become a Robin Hood of sorts, fighting against the "Republic" that now runs the western part of what used to be the US - and Jun

I read a lot of dystopian fiction. Those who don't will rate this higher, as might middle schoolers. The problem is, the writing isn't very good, and the plot isn't very unique. The two alternating voices do not sound distinct from one another, and the sentences are choppy. The storyline is fine, but nothing I haven't read before.
