What Members Thought
This book features a very determined, strong protagonist that I liked quite a bit. I enjoyed how the world was divided into factions and the premise of the story. This first book is all set up for what's to come in future volumes - there is a LOT of fighting/training scenes - about 50% of the book was prep and the ending was super rushed and not very believable - which was too bad since I liked what was happening with the climax - finally a reason for her being different and for what they were t

First read Feb14/12 to Feb18/12. Library edition.
Imagine a world.... No, make it easier. Imagine Chicago... because in this dystopia that's all there appears to be, Chicago. So imagine dystopian Chicago (that shouldn't be too hard). Everyone belongs to one of five factions: Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the fearless), Erudite (the intelligent, or if you prefer, the humorless), Candor (they wear only black and white and cannot tell a lie), and Amity (the friendly people). But you don't have to pay attention to the last two. They really

It was a really fast read. There are a bunch of ideas and concepts that I really enjoyed. I wanted to see more of her mother... I did not enjoy the first-person narrative. I wasn't big on the romance going on. I find it sad that it's book for teens and young-adult because there are great things inside but it's hard to focus on them on the main character is kissing her instructor.
But the story has other flaws so let's not focus on romance because that just bugged me but I think other people appr ...more

This was my second attempt at reading this book; I gave up about 300 pages in. I don't think this is a horrible book. I have friends who like it and I understand why they do. It just wasn't for me. I'm not huge fan of YA dystopian novels to begin with, which didn't help. Long story short, I found the premise behind the dystopian world Roth has created to be rather silly, which kept me from enjoying this.

Fabulous novel! Similar to The Hunger Games with a dystopian future and divided factions, but it goes in a different direction where you are tested at a certain age to see which faction you most relate to, then you can choose which faction you will belong to. But there is also the risk of being factionless, an outcast from society. There's really not much more I can say without giving away spoilers, but it's one of those novels that you just can't put down. Loved it!
