What Members Thought

First read Feb14/12 to Feb18/12. Library edition.

Divergent does not end with the end, it continues directly into Insurgent. I have to read more...
There are clues left behind in this book about what happens next, it's like a test for the mind to try to guess or wish for what to happen further. Honestly I don't care much about the love scenes, but those help to smoothen a bit the intensity or the atrocity.
The idea about this dystopia is different from others in the personal sense, it's too personal somehow on the behavioral aspect. The character ...more

Aw, this is really hard for me to review...
I find that when most reviews rant and rave about the book, the less excited I get about reading it. With the upcoming Hunger Games movie though, I wanted to read something in similar line (ie. dystopia). I liked it but I don't love it - that makes me sad :(
I liked Roth's descriptive ways (I don't have the book in front of me now but when I do, I'll update this review with a quote). And I really liked the suspense involved for the Aptitude test, in find ...more

To enjoy this book, you have to suspend your disbelief. A lot.
I wasn't a big fan of the first half of the book, because it reminded me too much of the passages of Ender's Game that I didn't enjoy: descriptions of training exercises and fighting. When the tasks changed, it became more interesting and the last third or fourth of the book was actually quite gripping.
And yet every now and then I had to pause and shake my head (not literally), because the basis for the book, for the world it's set i ...more

This was my second attempt at reading this book; I gave up about 300 pages in. I don't think this is a horrible book. I have friends who like it and I understand why they do. It just wasn't for me. I'm not huge fan of YA dystopian novels to begin with, which didn't help. Long story short, I found the premise behind the dystopian world Roth has created to be rather silly, which kept me from enjoying this.

Fabulous novel! Similar to The Hunger Games with a dystopian future and divided factions, but it goes in a different direction where you are tested at a certain age to see which faction you most relate to, then you can choose which faction you will belong to. But there is also the risk of being factionless, an outcast from society. There's really not much more I can say without giving away spoilers, but it's one of those novels that you just can't put down. Loved it!

I have now jumped on the Divergent train. There is nothing like owning an entire series before you start reading it. This way I can just plow through the rest of the books without having to wait on any to be written. Divergent is plot driven more so than character driven, but I'm willing to roll with it.

I am starting Insurgent now and I can not wait. I really didn't like the ending to Divergent. I was just reading along and then it was over. I didn't even realize it was the end so I don't feel like it had a complete ending.
