It took me a while to get through this one. Not because I hated it, or the writing was bad. I just wasn't in the mood for this type of book right now. But I did enjoy it, and will read the next one.
Kate. Oh, Kate, you prickly pear. You are hard on the outside, but soft and possibly magical on the inside. Curran, you alpha alpha male. You are all the things I love in a hero. Strong on the outside, but I can tell you are a fierce protector and a bit of a softy, too. Don't worry, your secret is saf ...more

This is probably a case of, "It's not you, it's me." UF is really not my favorite genre. Too much world building, too many characters and rules and regulations within the world to keep track of, too many races/supernatural beings for me. Doesn't help I read this while I have a pretty annoying headache.
But, in keeping with the GR rating system, two stars for me is, "It was okay." If the urge to read UF strikes again, I'd definitely give this series another shot. I've heard it gets better with the ...more

Kate Daniels has been a name I've heard a lot, and always with glowing recommendations about the series. I'm sad to say, she doesn't do it for me.
The world building had some interesting ideas, but I felt a little lost in the world. I listened to a good majority of this on a road trip, so maybe I missed something, but I had to look up some info on the book before I really got the magic/technology relationship.

It reminded me, in some ways, of the Dresden novels, in that we have a very sarcastic hero(ine), there is magic in what is basically a "normal" world, and we have knights, vampires and were-folk. However, other than that bare description, this book bears little resemblance to Jim Butcher's world. In this world, everyone is aware of magic, which only works some of the time. Conversely, "tech" only works when magic doesn't.
I loved this book and will be starting on the next one this evening. ...more
