I'm torn on this one, a 4 or a 5 rating. Needless to say (haha) it was an incredible book, full of twists and turns that I thought I had figured out until, bam, another sharp turn in an unexpected direction. The story is incredibly done, both horrific and sensitive at the same time. And it's about the worst of subjects, child abuse and survivor pain and suffering.

I read that Catriona Ward has won the Derleth prize for her earlier works. I need to seek them out.

I would recommend going into this one blind. I've never read anything quite like this before and I enjoyed it all the more for not really knowing what to expect. ...more

Thank you NetGalley for the free ARC. This is a very dark book about child abduction indeed. It took me awhile to figure out what was going on and the book definitely has a strong sense of foreboding. Would I watch the movie? No! Too creepy.

One of the worst books I’ve ever read. Don’t go into this thinking you are reading a horror book because there is nothing scary about it.
