I'll probably revise this later but for now, I will just say that the back cover of my edition of this book calls it "The Strangest Love Story Ever Told" and I have to concur. It is weird, creepy and frankly, not really a love story. It is more of a ghost story, or a tale of revenge and how it can destroy a person's soul. Be prepared to find every single character unlikeable and/ or sad and pathetic. In the early 19th-century words such as alcoholism, child abuse, co-dependence or post traumatic ...more

This started off good for me, and I thought I was going to really like it. But it just went more and more downhill as it went along. I hated every character, and didn't find it an enjoyable book to read. My copy of the book said "love never dies" on the front cover, which I found laughable, because I hardly felt affection from anyone towards anyone else, let alone love. I don't understand why this has been shelved so many times as a romance.

And I really hated every time Joseph spoke in the book.

Thank goodness I am done. I don't understand the point of this tale. The characters are unlikable, whiney, jealous brats. Even the adults! The only possible likable character was the housekeeper and that's just because the rest were so awful. ...more

I am not sure what my preconception was based on, but while it was a love story, of sorts, it is more like what I would imagine would come out if Stephen King decided to write a love story. Everyone in the story is miserable because they are in love with someone and not honest about it and have to watch life play out in a different direction. The story is much more twisted and dark than I had expected, and I liked it. It was like wa ...more

2014 is my reread the classics year. I thought that I would kick off February with this one. This tale of the relationship between Catherine and Heathcliff is one that I return to every few years.

I've heard this called a great love story by many people but I don't agree that it is a love story. To me it's a story of obsession, bad choices and enormous grief. The grief parts were realistic but I didn't care about Heathcliff or Catherine. I also found the fact that the story was being told in retrospect by the housekeeper to be annoying. ...more
