This could have easily been a 5 star read for me but I had to remove a star & a half for the last 50 pages or so. The ending felt abrupt and some of the things that took place felt very rushed & not fully thought out. A few choices she made were more than just abrupt - they were just BAD. I got to a point where I was wondering how she was going to wrap this up in so few pages ... and then I felt let down as if she took the easy way out or something. The hospital scene ... what? Wow, what an incredible story! I don't think I've ever really read anything centering around the Dust Bowl. While I'd heard of it, I don't think I'd ever really dived down deep into all that went on. This book was beautifully written, incredibly tragic, but inspiring at the same time - showing just how strong people can be in the hardest of times. Reading Elsa's story, I wondered if I would have been able to survive as she did, if I would have been able to persevere.

This was not at all a hopeful book. It seems like if something could go wrong for our main characters, it did. It was pretty depressing. Still, very well written and I got more of a feel for a time period that I really don't know much about. ...more

I am usually a fan of Kristin Hannah‘s books, but this is not one of them. If you are going to read a long and depressing book about the Great Depression, read the Grapes of Wrath. The Four Winds is almost the same story except with a female protagonist.

Good story. So much heartache, and sadness during the depression/dust bowl era. Its sad to know that some things haven't changed, but hopefully we've learned something from this era so it won't repeat itself. ...more
