Before I read this novel set in the Great Depression/Dust Bowl, my favorite Kristin Hannah novel was The Great Alone. This one is heartbreaking, infuriating, and moving.
It has strong female characters and incredible events that really happened. (See The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck or Whose Names Are Unknown by Sanora Babb for more.) The sad, sad thing is that people that may feel infuriated on behalf of Elsa and her family may not feel the same for people trying to do the same today.

Wow, what an incredible story! I don't think I've ever really read anything centering around the Dust Bowl. While I'd heard of it, I don't think I'd ever really dived down deep into all that went on. This book was beautifully written, incredibly tragic, but inspiring at the same time - showing just how strong people can be in the hardest of times. Reading Elsa's story, I wondered if I would have been able to survive as she did, if I would have been able to persevere.

This was not at all a hopeful book. It seems like if something could go wrong for our main characters, it did. It was pretty depressing. Still, very well written and I got more of a feel for a time period that I really don't know much about.

Good story. So much heartache, and sadness during the depression/dust bowl era. Its sad to know that some things haven't changed, but hopefully we've learned something from this era so it won't repeat itself.

4.5 stars. Reading this in 2025 was a choice. Made the happenings in the story a lot more vivid, sadly.
