Summer 2021 (August);

I really quite loved this book.

The writing is smooth, lyrical, and so well bandied about in every mood. I love the deal that is struck between The Dark and Addie, and all the repercussions that are made to fall out from it (and especially that it's impossible to work around them). I love the clear message about 'the power beyond an idea' being sometimes more powerful than anything specific and set in stone. I love the march of scenes through history, and the interplay betw

Mostly, I couldn't put this one down! As everyone else has gushed: the characters, writing, plot, and atmosphere are all captivating. Still, during the last 1/3rd of the book, it began to feel a bit long. This was extremely good, it hooked me right from the start, and is unique and well-written, and I really enjoyed seeing how and why Addie's character grew over time. It made me think about freedom, time, and love, and what people would sacrifice for those. Also, the ending was just perfect, LOVED that.

However, I'm clearly in the minority, but I wouldn't call it one of my top books of the year, much less ever. The middle dragged a bit for me and I was disappointed that some of the really exciting
