What Members Thought
I listened to this on audio. I got the audiobook from the e-library on March 26th and I decided I would listen to it for a few minutes while taking care of some chores. I ended up getting so engrossed in it I spent six whole hours listening to it!
The full audiobook is around 17 hours, and despite the next day being a busy day, I got in another 8 hours of listening in between appointments. I finally finished the last three hours the next morning, and I gotta tell you, I loved it so much, I felt l ...more

Summer 2021 (August);
I really quite loved this book.
The writing is smooth, lyrical, and so well bandied about in every mood. I love the deal that is struck between The Dark and Addie, and all the repercussions that are made to fall out from it (and especially that it's impossible to work around them). I love the clear message about 'the power beyond an idea' being sometimes more powerful than anything specific and set in stone. I love the march of scenes through history, and the interplay betw ...more

Mostly, I couldn't put this one down! As everyone else has gushed: the characters, writing, plot, and atmosphere are all captivating. Still, during the last 1/3rd of the book, it began to feel a bit long. Perhaps I'm spoiled by all the short stories I've been reading lately, but it seemed that 50 pages could have been cut out and it would have still been wonderful. The chapters are all super short, mostly 2-5ish pages each, and while that does make convenient reading since one can easily pick it

When I started this book I was worried it would pale in comparison to Pete Hamil’s Forever, one of my top 10 favorite books. It seemed to take on a similar premise but focus on sex and days instead of the changes in the world throughout the course of time.
As the story developed, it became clear that the books were different and I could stop comparing the two. This book is beautiful and I was able to separate the books in my mind. I usually wait a while before I add things to my all time favorite ...more

This was extremely good, it hooked me right from the start, and is unique and well-written, and I really enjoyed seeing how and why Addie's character grew over time. It made me think about freedom, time, and love, and what people would sacrifice for those. Also, the ending was just perfect, LOVED that.
However, I'm clearly in the minority, but I wouldn't call it one of my top books of the year, much less ever. The middle dragged a bit for me and I was disappointed that some of the really exciting ...more
