Zachary Ezra Rawlins finds a painted door when he's 11 but he doesn't open it. Now he's a graduate student and he find a strange book in the library that describes this experience. Zachary traces the book to a party at the Algonquin and eventually ends up underground at a harbor on the starless sea. This book was my jam. Or maybe honey? I know it's not for everyone but I absolutely loved it, even when I was stuck in the doldrums just past the halfway mark. Every word, every story, every thread that was tied up into the tapestry of this novel was just right. The POV! Zachary Ezra Rawlins! I'm very glad that Lev Grossman let E.M. borrow the bees and keys from THE MAGICIANS, and at times the prose reminded me of how much I loved that first novel, and of Gaiman's STARDUST.
