What a nice refreshing read. I was pleasantly surprised with this book. I would have finished the book in one sitting but i did need to sleep.

I love Bri. She is a strong yet sensitive character. Along with her mother, Jay, they are both survivors. What I really loved about Bri was her determination to stay true to herself and what she believes in and not giving into social pressure or sterotypes. This is definitely not the kind of book I usually read, but I read it as part of a local bookstores Epic Reads book club and I was very impressed. As a fan of hip hop, I appreciated the conversations revolving around those issues. Angie Thomas really captures what it can be to live in a dysfunctional household without also making us realize that all family's have some level of dysfunction and, sometimes, that's ok.
