This book was crazy! It was fun! It was a wild ride.
I just loved it.
The movie? Not so much. It wasn't just that they tried to squeeze too much in. They didn't really get the feel of the characters.
In the book you really loved some people and you really hated some people. But you didn't pick up on that in the film. So disappointing.
Even though the book had SO many characters, you got the feel for each one. The storyline was fun but also serious in places. I can't wait to read book #2. ...more

I’m struggling with this review. I read this one during a really busy time in my life and I’m concerned that accounts for my not loving it as much as I expected. I kept hearing so many great things but it didn’t quite meet my expectations. In the end, it all came together for me but it was slightly painful getting there at times. I almost put it down a few times but I kept coming back. I’m glad that I did. It is a fun read – kind of a glitzy soap opera sort of novel. The characters were really i

I watched the movie first and I really loved it. So I decided that I had to read the book. And I ended up really loving it! This reminded me of an older version of Gossip Girl with an all Asian cast and even more over the top characters. If you like Gossip Girl, you’ll like this. But this was a bit more grounded than Gossip Girl was with characters and situations that balanced out the over the top elements.
This was a fascinating and mostly fun romp through the ultra-rich lifestyles of several Singapore families. I loved the insider sneak peek from an author who it seems has lived this life. It manages to also feel very Austenian with money and social status often taking precedence over all interactions and life choices.

I HATE HER!!! I HATE THE SELFISH SNIVELING BITCH!
I really wished she would go to China and they would catch her and force her to stay because she wasn't really USonian but Chinese, as her mother kidnapped her, and forced to live in China for the rest of her miserable, stinking, fucking life. ...more

Very amusing story about a Chinese American woman who visits her boyfriend's family and experiences the incredibly rich life style in Singapore. The beginning of the book is one of my favorite opening scenes.
My daughters think that some of the characters resemble my extended family. Shhh, don't tell my aunts and cousins.
With-reservations:
bullying, sexual innuendos & situations, prejudice, drugs, adultery
Danielle: (view spoiler)
Francesca: (view spoiler) ...more

Fun, trashy, fast read. One of my favorite reviewers dubbed it “Crack Lit” and I suspect that term encapsulates the trilogy (I am on Book 2 at the moment and the term definitely applies to that one too). Enjoy it for what it is - a guilty pleasure and great escape!
