It took me a little while to get into this first in the series, but it makes sense that it felt that way. Toby's life itself is pretty disjointed at this point -- she just returned to her normal changeling self after spending FOURTEEN YEARS as a fish in a koi pond when she was attacked while trying to solve what happened to her liege's wife and daughter.

This book had a very slow start, but once it picked up, I liked it. I did kind of feel like we were dropped into the middle of the story (I felt like it needed more world-building background/explanations), but maybe that means future books in the series will flesh it out more. There were a lot of characters that helped the main heroine out and we weren't really told why or what their relationship to her was. I picked this up because I loved the "Newsflesh" trilogy and heard this was other work the author was behind. I otherwise wouldn't have picked this up; the genre isn't much my thing. Still, in spite of not being a fan of books that focus heavily on fantasy elements like faeries and such, I found myself enjoying the story. I may even continue and read more in the series, which I didn't think was likely when I first started October's story.
