Shelves: series, fantasy, read-in-2020, buddy-read

I have never read an all-black cast fantasy before this one, which is so crazy, but I am SO happy this book/series exists. The message was important and the story felt real and relatable.

I loved Zélie and Amari, both individually and as friends. Although they were far from friends at the beginning of the story, I appreciated the growth and strength on both ends. A character I couldn't stand? Inan. And Tzain at some parts.

Shelves: fantasy, young-adult, ya-fantasy

I had high expectations, because Adeyemi had a very unique setting, but unfortunately the book didn't live up to that. There's nothing wrong with the book, but for someone who reads a lot of fantasy and YA it just didn't feel unique enough. I would still recommend it to a teen or someone not used to reading books in this genre. It has adventure, magic, diversity, and a cool setting, so what's not to like? ...more
