Shelves: mystery, library, mystery-thriller, murder-mystery

So I kind of expected something more you know with all the hype about this authors books, I was left rather disappointed. It could just be that Sharp Objects is the lesser of Gillian Flynn's books but I can not really make that call as I have yet to read anything else by her, I should also keep in mind that this was also her debut novel. I do know however that this book has been highly rated by many people on GR. So I am probably in the minority when I say it was kinda meh.

Really great book. The characters are extremely unlikeable but very interesting. The novel follows an early 30ish newspaper reporter, Camille Preaker from Chicago sent back to her home town in Missouri to cover the story of the murder of two young girls. She's not met with open arms by her mother Adora and much younger step sister Amma. As the story unfolds we learn more and more about these interesting but unlikeable characters. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. This was my first experience with Gillian Flynn's work. I flew through this book. It was very easy to read, and I found her first person narrator interesting (if not always reliable or likable).

Sharp Objects sets a tense atmosphere and develops a stifling small town setting. But how everything unraveled left me feeling underwhelmed.

This book was such an interesting and disturbing look at family dynamics, so much that the murder mystery aspect really took second place. That played out in the narrative as well as in how everyone in the town seemed to treat the murders too, a lot of the characters really seemed to play the horror of it only lip service, and immediately focused on their own lives, problems, and the never-ending search for town gossip.
