Set in an alternate reality where the library in Alexandria wasn't destroyed and now the Great Library controls the flow of information though books in their codex and the ownership of original books is outlawed. Jess comes from a family who illegally trades in original books. His father decides to have Jess try to join the library to be a spy for the family. Jess joins a class of library recruits, only 6 of whom will be offered positions in the library. The story was interesting but I wish more ...more

The world interested me far more than the plot. Loose ends left dangling eternally, back stories needlessly interjected, and writing that seemed designed to hold the reader at a distance. Most confusing was the decision to share information with the reader before the characters. The middle really dragged on but I'm so curious about where things are headed that I have to read on! Loved the side characters and the setting, and especially a male protagonist! ...more

I really enjoyed reading this book. I liked the characters that Jess meets at school and the adventures that endure in the name of earning a place at the library. The world has an interesting premise, especially to someone that loves books and reading. I also liked the politics of the world that Caine created and look forward to reading the next two books in the trilogy.

Very enjoyable and clever new YA book. I really liked both the characters and the story. Will read the next in series!
