This is a gripping story of the brave women in France who survived the German occupation and participated in the Resistance. This is an important story and one that is unfortunately not often told. The impact that war has on the innocent civilians is not one we often want to think about. The reason that I bumped it to 4 stars is I do not think the characters have an authentic French voice (they sound VERY American to me!) and it got a tad sentimental, even though it worked, I cried the last prob ...more

Breathtaking

This book was incredible. Descriptive, heartbreaking, and full of courage. It left me weeping, and reminded of the strength of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable horrors. Gut wrenching, terrifying, and beautiful.

This is a book I probably would not have picked up if I had seen in the bookstore or the library. I read it because it was voted as the best historical fiction on goodreads.

All I can say is thank goodness I read it. The story from the first page kept me entranced and I wanted to read it all in one sitting. Powerful emotions and imagery throughout the story.

The story of two sisters, Vianne and Isabelle, living in France during WWII. Isabelle decides to join the resistance and ends up living in Paris. Vianne meanwhile is left at home with her Daughter Sophie while her husband is in a POW camp. A German officer comes to stay with them.
