A beautifully written, heartbreaking piece of historical fiction. Set in World War II France during the Nazi occupation, we follow the lives of two sisters who both deal with the war in very different ways. Young, impulsive Isabelle rushes headlong into the Resistance, while her older sister Vianne is just trying to keep her daughter alive until her husband returns from the Front.

This got off to a slow start for me… I found the characters vaguely annoying. But I’ll push through since this book is so popular.
I got about halfway in - I have this a good chance! But I find this super boring. Not for me, I suppose.
Anyways I read the plot summary and the second half sounds like a lot happens. But life is too short for books that don’t grab me. So maybe another time :)
Skimmed.

My sister bought this for me as a Christmas gift and I just devoured it in less than two days.
It was one of the best books I’ve read in a very long time.
It completely tore my heart out. Ugly sobbing occurred
It’s beautifully written, it’s a beautiful story, it’s historically accurate and it sheds light on the stories of the untold female heroes of war that often aren’t told.
Go and read it.
