What Members Thought

“There are many Gods in America. It is just that many people either do not believe in them or see them anymore. Are they real or not? Only you could decide on that.”
I have been a huge fan of Neil Gaiman’s works for many years and some of my favorite works done by Neil Gaiman included Coraline and the “Sandman” series. So, when I heard that Neil Gaiman was writing some books for older teens and adults, I just had to check them out and that is where I found “American Gods!” “American Gods” has ...more

Neil Gaiman is a truly talented writer. I had heard so much about this book before I started it, including an interview with Gaiman himself, that I had high hopes. I was not disappointed. The depth and complexity of this novel made it a pleasure to read, but it was still a page turner. Shadow is a fantastic hero - he made me think of a flawed Jack Reacher. I loved how he took everything that happened i his stride, calmly and without question - meeting Wednesday and discovering he was a god, the

I have always loved Neil Gaiman's books for younger readers, but I confess that his adult novels have left me cold. He wrote (I thought) like someone who had made his start in comics and graphic novels. Although his writing was witty, his characters seemed shallow, and his settings seemed dim without the aid of pictures.
American Gods, however, has changed my mind entirely. First there was this line:
"Wednesday looked like he had learned to smile from a manual"

Shadow is released from jail after finding out that his wife had died in a car accident. Soon he is offered a job from a mysterious man, Mr. Wednesday. Thus begins a magical roadtrip through middle America and dying mythology. I really enjoyed reading this book. I find all the different gods and mythology very interesting and I could tell that Gaiman did a lot of research. After reading the book, I am interested in finding more information on a lot of the gods and characters that made an appeara

The idea here is that when immigrants came to America, they brought their own gods with them and then promptly forgot about them as they assimilated and the world turned away from religion and toward the modern life of credit cards and Internet. Now thes gods have to eke out a living, they are tired of being forgotten and want to fight the new "gods". Not sure I am fully invested in the plot line. The characters are very strange and not very likeable. Reminded me of Tom Robbins and Jitterbug perf

All I can say is WOW! What a great read. So much going on in the story but it all comes together in the end.
The cast of characters is large and each play an important role and some left me surprised.
Wonderfully woven story and definitely worth the 5 stars!
