What Members Thought

Paula Hawkins' debut novel The Girl on the Train is THE book that everyone is talking about these days. And with good reason.
The novel is a compulsively readable psychological thriller that gives us shifting narrative view points from three different -- and completely unreliable -- narrators. Rachel, Anna and Megan each have pieces of the puzzle as to what happened when, well, that might be giving away too much. Each of these women's lives has multiple points of intersection and watching as Hawk ...more

This book really is all it is cracked up to be. I think my enjoyment of it was enhanced by listening to it on audio, so the three narrators who read the three speaking characters in the book really perfected the personalities of all three. When we first meet Rachel, she is pathetic, infuriating, completely unlikable, but the more we get to know her and the deeper we fall into the mystery into which she has become embroiled, the more pity I felt towards her (although I never actually liked her -

Not what I had expected after seeing all the hype for this book. The main character, Rachel, got extremely annoying very early in the book.
Concept was out of the ordinary which made that aspect of the story enjoyable, but overall book wasn't anything extraordinary. ...more

Rachel Watson is an alcoholic who was has lost her job but still travels by train daily to make her roommate think she's still employed. While traveling Rachel becomes interested in a couple she names Jason and Jess who lives a few doors down from where her former husband and his new wife reside. When Jess, real name Megan, disappears Rachel becomes involved in the investigation. Not so much of a mystery for me because i figured out the killer early on but I liked how the truth was gradually rev

The book is quite good, I thought a lot about the rating if it should be 3 or 4 stars. The idea is amazing, the plot also and I love the way the story unfolds! The only irritating thing is Rachel's drinking issue, it simply made her seem so vulnerable and stupid at times. Nevertheless, by the end of the book it makes sense why she had to be portrayed this way and maybe I would have liked a more detailed account of her feelings after the weird yet super bonding experience with Anna in the end. I came on to see what other people's thoughts on this book were. I found it harder and harder to relate to the characters as the story progressed because it felt like a life so far from my own. While I had a hard time putting the book down, it was like reading juicy gossip. The Girl On The Train was an entertaining read, but at the same time felt like a waste of my time.

Dark and disturbing psychological thriller & a quick easy read, but I felt there were a few too many cliches from the genre for me to really love it.
