I had no preconceptions when I started this book, but even so I was surprised at the scope of the journey I traveled to get to the expected end of the story. In this version of the Wicked Witch of the West, Gregory Maguire explores the following question: "One never learns how the witch became wicked, or whether that was the right choice for her - is it ever the right choice?" We pretty much learn how and why - in his view - the witch became wicked, but the rightness or wrongness of her choices

I got about 2/3 of the way through this book and just had to quit. It wasn't very good and it was so hard to get through. I'm such a purist...I don't like to stop reading a book once I've committed but I just couldn't do it. Epic fail. Why was this book so popular???
