I saw the movie and loved it! It has one of my favorite movie quotes of all time: "so, I'm gonna have the science the sh!t outta this." As a former scientist, I love this. I was hoping the book would fill in some gaps that were in the movie and it does...to a point. The book is definitely hard science fiction - lots of science and explanations of how he figures out how things work - it's all accurate stuff, which is great, but, even for me, boring as martian dust!

OMG! Loved it! Great premise, great storyline, great suspense! The only downside is the science tangents. Watney's character explains every bit of MacGyver-ing that he has to do in incredible detail. My background in astro-engineering-chemistry-botony is a little rusty, so when he starts droning on about hydrolizing molecules of whatever I tended to skim over it and think "ok, sure, if you say so." It reminded me a little of Michael Crichton's writing, he also gets a little science-happy. But th

If I was into engineering, perhaps I'd have loved this book and all of the fixes done for survival, but...I'm not. I found this to be way too detailed about the survival techniques and a bit boring. I also didn't find some of it realistic. I haven't seen the movie for the same reason I never watched Gravity...One person alone in space seems boring. 2.5 stars.
