“I guess you could call it a "failure", but I prefer the term "learning experience.”
Finally! I got the chance to read Andy Weir’s bestselling classic (now turned into a movie) “The Martian” and now I am seriously kicking myself for not reading this book sooner! Who would have thought that I would be reading a science fiction novel that is full of adventure, drama and humor?
The book starts off with a space crew going on Mars to explore the red planet when suddenly, a dust storm shows up and t ...more

What an amazing story. Watney is funny and witty and has a ferocious will to survive. From page one, you are rooting him on. He details out every struggle and every plan. He gives you the highs and lows and everything in between.
At the same time, you're with NASA with each news report, catastrophe, plan and horror filled moment. This isn't a book with warm fuzzy feelings and you're right to be worried the whole way and worry about those in s ...more

This should have been a 5 star read - in fact I'd give it 4.5 stars, but I listened to it as an audiobook and although it was a brilliant way to experience this book, it is also what lost it half a star. The story of Mark Watney, who is left behind after one of the manned Mars missions is aborted, is fascinating. This is proper science fiction, with lots of science! It would be really interesting to see how much of it is feasible, but I completely admire the author for his endless ability to fin

Definitely one of the best and smartest sci-fi novel I've ever read so far. I loved the seriousness of it all and at the same time Mark's funny log comments. A must read for sure. I got so worked up by the end, so emotional even, it was almost like I was there cheering for the Ares crew.

I thought this book was only okay. I did not think it was particularly well-written. Entire sections of the book are super dry and technical. The characters seem like emotionless super genius robots. Then during other sections the characters morph into very immature frat-boy types, like teens. The women scientists are weirdly sexualized and demeaned throughout. Did not seem realistic at all and I couldn't ever get really into the story or believe the tension was real. It got tedious. I didn't fi

After a slow start, this turned out to be a really enjoyable story!

Mark Watney is left behind on Mars when the rest of his crew has to make an emergency exit and believes Mark has died in a sandstorm. Mark is left to try to find a way to survive and to get in touch with Earth to tell them he's alive and hopefully be rescued. An edge of your seat read. A lot of bad things happen to Mark but the author makes it all very believable and the science understandable. I couldn't put this book down. I had to know what happened next.

Holy crap I enjoyed this book! I started this in June and got about 10% of the way through and just wasn't feeling it. I'm SO glad I picked it up again!
