Very rarely do I love and HATE a book as much as I do this one. But, the fact that I hate it is the reason I love it.

The development of the world and the cast of characters was just amazing. It was slow and steady, never giving away enough about someone to let you know who they were.

And I enjoyed the constant reminders that everyone could hear what he was thinking. The reminder as people responded to his thoughts with words, or when he heard someone's Noise and had his own thoughts about it.

Shelves: fantasy, ya, sci-fi

I hadn't expected to enjoy this book as much as I did. It was a real page turner. At first I thought I would struggle with the language - Todd, the narrator, is not educated and as it is written in the first person there are odd spellings and turns of phrase. But I got used to it and barely noticed it by the end. I loved the developing relationship between Todd and Viola, and I absolutely loved Manchee. Hated the mis-spellings and grammar (this isn't dictation, you're an author trying to tell a story, stop obscuring the message already - sorry but this drives me up the wall), hated when a main character died, liked the world-building, characters were okay, basically just liked the idea of this book, and somehow my optimism glossed over the parts I didn't like and left me with 4 stars, Weird. ...more
