What Members Thought

3 stars in 2018

Kate Daniels is a tough act to follow and it must be difficult as an author (authors) to come up with something just as good when you've come up with something just that good. But this book was really entertaining and very different. Of course, we had the vampire and the alpha werewolf, but the twist of them all coming from different parts of the universe added something to this story which I haven't come across before. I loved the magic of the inn and Dina herself, although without the wonderfu

Just my notes
The people in the pictures are way too young for their alleged age. The woman in her 60's looks 25. The 27-year-old looks like he's 16.
It's so great how they show not tell, giving us little snippets as we go. There's a big tell sequence late in the book but it works okay and by then I was very invested and it didn't matter.
The Darth Vader GPS is awesome. I want one.
An English punctuation mark being the universal sign for distress is silly.
This is much lighter and more whimsical ...more

I've neglected reading this book, and the series, because, well, it's about a woman with a glowing broom. Who runs an inn, for god's sake. How could that ever compete with Kate Andrews and her sharp blade?
I had conveniently forgotten about the awesome talent that resides in the writing team that is Ilona Andrews. I allowed myself to prejudge this book as unworthy simply because of my false assumption that a book about an innkeeper's gotta be boring as hell.
Mea culpa. Mea maxima culpa.

I didn't like this as well as the Kate Daniels series, but it was still pretty good. There were a few infodumps in the form of dialogue that had my eyes glazing over, so that's why it didn't rate higher.

I absolutely loved this setting. Werewolves and vampires as alien creatures, a magical house, and the innkeepers as a neutral Swiss territory for all creatures. I thought Dina and Beast were spunky and fun, and two hot-headed heroes as potential love interests are always enjoyable. I liked the tongue-in-cheek meta reference at the end about love triangles too. Hilarious.

The concept of this series -- a magical inn and innkeeper with a symbiotic relationship -- is a very interesting one. I found the back story of vampires and werewolves coming from other planets with complex histories to be too much. It was just excess baggage and not particularly interesting.
The innkeeper/heroine is aged 24 but the narrator sounded at least twice (possibly three times) her age. Because of that, the voice and the story line never meshed for me. I'm sure the narrator would be fine ...more

Great beginning to the series. A lot of interesting characters, that I can't wait for more from to see how everything progresses. Also a lot of humor. A fantastically fierce female figure! It doesn't get much better than that!
