The author wrote this book when she was 23. When I was 23 I was drinking beer and eating pizza. I finished this on my daughter's 23rd birthday. Oddly enough, I think my daughter could write a book like this.

It's been a long time since I've read this novel (I'm re-reading it for a Book Group), but its poignancy is undiminished. "Heart" is filled with characters who are outsiders, out-of-step with their peers. At the center is deaf-mute John Singer, who many use as a mirror for their hopes and fears without ever considering the depth of the solitude in his silence.
