But what was supposed to be a happy vacation turns into an awkward and dangerous situation soon enough. Problems begin before Taylor’s departure, when he happens to spot a familiar face in the crowd gathered in the airport; fearing it could be a terrorist who had been considered dead, he starts a procedure for searching flights which eventually ends with him being in trouble… and losing his flight to Paris. His obvious bad temper gets worse when he phones Will at one o’clock in the morning to warn him about his delay… Only to have the called answered by Will’s ex-lover, Lieutenant Commander David Bradley. When they finally meet, their companionship seems unnatural, as if their eleven months apart had created a gap in their relationship neither of them knows how to overcome. This awkwardness is forgotten when there is a terrorist threat which cancels their leave and throws them back in a working relationship. Their situation gets really dangerous, endangering not only their lives but also their relationship forever.
Oh, the pain! Of all the books about this couple, this is by far the most painful of them. The way Taylor suffers… it is excruciating. It is hinted at the very first time they meet, when they rejoin in the airport after the long separation, when they kiss
“Taylor moaned, and it was only part pleasure because it hurt like hell to love anyone this much, to be whole only when that person was by your side”.
Taylor is to suffer in Paris. He is hurt when he finds Bradley is in Paris, he is hurt when he sees how happy and at ease Will feels there, when he finds out he is considering keeping the position for another year… But the coup de grace for Taylor comes with Will’s amnesia… After a terrorist attack, Will suffers a certain type of amnesia and big gaps of last year have been erased from his mind. He has forgotten about his relationship with Taylor, and he thinks he is still with Bradley. That’s just too much for Taylor. “It was like taking a punch to the heart.(…). His pain was too raw, too transparent”. Taylor’s insecurities convince him that Will has forgotten because he wants to forget. He always thought that Will regretted their relationship, and now he has a proof. As for Will, he is as lost as anybody would be in this situation. His best friend turns out to be his lover, and he suffers for him and for Bradley, because he does not know what went wrong with them. This is the hell of a situation for a control freak like Will.
I thought this was going to be the end of their relationship. With Will convinced that the relationship, if real, was a mistake, and Taylor decided to accept the offer in Iraq… The end of the book is surprising and opens a door for them, but I am not sure they will easily overcome what has happened there. That wound of having been forgotten by the person you love most in the world is going to hurt like hell for a time. I want to see what happens. I want to see them getting over their problems and I want a HEA for them. I hope Josh Lanyon does not make me suffer a lot in the in between!!!.

I really, really love Josh Lanyon. Really. He's a fantastic writer. I love all the literary references in his books, the complex relationships, the opposites attracts theme. And I thought this series was great too. But I did have a problem with the relationship between the two men. It just seemed as though there was no HEA for them. Taylor definitely seemed more invested in the relationship, Will kept holding back, doing whatever the hell he wanted and assuming Taylor would just wait for him whi ...more

Will. Will. Will. You are driving me crazy. If you love Taylor then why do you lust after David? Why have dinner with David and invite him to your home when you are in Paris and Taylor is in the US? Man up. If Taylor is The ONE then tell David in no uncertain terms. Close that door. If Will has an affair with David I hope Taylor kicks them both in their nuts and then finds someone who will love only him. This is what was ranting though my mind as I read this book.
