"Nobody else exists to me when he lands. Everything stops existing when he takes off, as if he takes it all with him when he goes up there, to places I'll never see again"
No, I don't read Voinov (Gasp!! *I can feel the death stares and the 'How COULD you?!?s'*).
It's not that I don't find him a great author -- it's just that he is so good, his stories (of those I tried to read) usually left me feeling either in despair or bleak, which of course ends up with me DNF-ng them (I need my happy feelin ...more

This story was different.
Not only because of the setting on a German airfield near Berlin in the last days of WWII. Not only because both main characters were German Wehrmacht soldiers, and not only because of the first person present tense narrative. But still, all those factors worked together to make it exceptional.

Having a love affair with planes, fighter pilots, and WWII makes this story interesting to me. I found the characters endearing, and the story had a surprising gentleness that you don't associate with war. It left me hoping they grow old together.

4.5! its amazing that a 44 page short story can completely grab me from page 1. this author can take a small situational plot and hit it out of the park. fighter pilots from 1945.....who'd have thought that would make an interesting love story. aleks did! and it was a great read!
i could see each look, feel each small physical contact like i was there myself. the writing style was unique as well. imo the style had a "poem" feel to it.
thank aleks for a sweet, intense and endearing short story!

I never would've thought of this book: it's a sweet and poignant love story! Love Baldur and Felix. With this kind of ending, one would hope for a new story. Some time. Somewhere. :-)
