Second review:
So I've read this four times now. These books never get old. I think what helps there is the romance. I'm not sure I'd want to reread a straight up mystery novel. I think I do mainly reread these for the romance aspect, as hard as that romance is to get through. BUT, here's the thing, with these books especially, the mysteries definitely enhance the romance. These books would be nothing without the mysteries, just like they would be equally nothing without the romance. So, there yo ...more

The fourth installment in the Adrien English Mysteries Death of a Pirate King not only lives up to the promise of the previous books, in many respects it surpassed my expectations which were already quite high. It is readily apparent that author Josh Lanyon has hit his stride in this book on all fronts.

The relationship between Jake and Adrien doesn't seem like its ever going to be an easy one, but this addition to the series manages to shed quite a bit of light on Jake's character, makes him seem less of jerk

Adrien English finds himself smack in the middle of another murder mystery--only this time LAPD Lt. Jake Riordan is encouraging him to do some amateur sleuthing instead of threatening to throw his ass in jail for interfering. So Adrien has his hands full with his informal investigation, his new step sisters, his faltering relationship with Guy . . . and his lingering feelings for the still-closeted (and now married) Jake. Adrien and his sharp tongue are in top form here; don't plan on putting th

Adrien is in transition, coping with his new step-family, a turn in his writing career, and his deepening relationship with Guy. Not the best time to witness another murder--or to try solving it with his ex, Jake Riordan. Adrien may have been keeping his distance from the closeted, married cop, but it's clear the man is still under his skin . . . and that kept me turning the pages just as much as the mystery!
