Christopher "Kit" Holmes has been summoned by his old mentor to replace her in an amateur writers retreat. When Kit gets there, however, his mentor tells him that the real reason behind her request is to ask Kit to find who is responsible for the threat of her life. At first, Kit is a bit reluctant but after he is involved in a car accident and then a real dead body turns up, Kit wonders if the threats are real after all. This book starts with a build-up of the mystery, pretty much like book #1. We have Kit attending the writers circle, meeting with the amateur writers, trying to "learn" about them and guess who might want to kill his mentor, Anna. I have to say that the shaping up is pretty HILARIOUS ... especially thanks to reading what Kit thinks about the writing draft. I must've grinning and giggling several times -- and by the way, I find it amusing that Kit is bringing "Adrien English" series with him (nice insiders' joke, there, Josh!). After Kit is involved in a crash accident and J.X. coming to his side, the pace picks up, and the real murder happens, and I'm starting to guessing the real person responsible along with Kit ...

Mystery wise, it's nice, though I can see who is the person responsible like, halfway through the book. Romance wise, I enjoy the next phase of the relationship; reading how slowly Kit opens himself to the possibility of J.X., healing from his prior relationship with David. I like how J.X. treats Kit so that Kit can see the difference of him and David. Personally, I also enjoy the fact that this time, the main narrator is older than his lover (Adrien is younger than Jake, as well as several other narrators in Josh's other series) ...

It's a lovely addition to the series. Next, if there is another sequel, I wonder if Kit can start writing his great American literature and moves on from Miss Butterwith, since he is also in a different place in his life with J.X. at his side. ...more

This book is even better than the first one in the series. I get more of what Kit and JX actually have in mind about each other and, especially for Kit, about himself; his anxiety, insecurity, and where/why were those coming from. Holmes may look on the outside as flippant, cynical, stand-offish, shallow and prone to drama. In actuality he's quite fiercely loyal to his friends, even when they betrayed him, has deep feeling for his partner, and really intelligent.

Okay, I admit it - I'm a series ho. I love a well-written series that shows a progression of emotional growth and realistic setbacks between engaging characters. I love a series that grabs me so tightly that I can't put the current book down and I can't wait for the next installment. This series has me folks - I'm a goner.

My first Kindle book and I really enjoyed it! The mystery really kept me guessing until the end and I didn't have a clue who the perpetrator was. The end wasn't cut and dried which made a nice change, but justice was definitely served.

The story is very dark, with a couple of the main characters not making it to the end, however, the relationship between J.X. and Kit is so lovely, with Kit finally letting his guard down and letting J.X. in. They make such a great couple! ...more

Love, love, LOVE Kit and JX! They're so fun and witty and smart and cute and wonderful...and I can't praise them, or Josh Lanyon, enough.
