The five-star rating applies to all the books in the series (five so far).

This book and its sequels are seriously awesome; I haven't been captivated by a series like this since Psycop and the Dresden files. What is probably not a coincidence: it's urban fantasy and has a witty first-person narrator in law enforcement.

One thing I particularly love about the Rivers of London series is the racial (and other) diversity aspect: trust me, you will totally buy into the deity of the Thames being a woma

I want more. When do I want it? Now!

The only copy of the second book is checked out from the library until the beginning of October. Will I be able wait until then?

I really appreciated that this is non-romancey urban fantasy. And liked the mix with a police procedural which l like but haven't read much of in recent years.

Not sure why this didn't click for me. There's nothing particularly wrong with it, the writing's okay. Dunno...just kinda dull. I shouldn't have to give myself reading assignments of x number of pages to get through a book. In fact I quit with only 30 pages to go. I had skimmed the previous 30 and I just couldn't do it anymore. I didn't care enough about anyone or anything happening. ...more

I loved the humor, the multiculturality of London, and the fact that the protagonist is a good example of it. The insertion of magic in ''our'' universe was good, but maybe a bit too smooth: Peter just accept it without much fuss. I found the last bit of the book weaker, and in fact it makes you wonder what was all of this about: the Punch and Judy part of the plot is not exactly gripping, I skimmed a bit in the last third of the book.

I think this is a book some people will love, will confuse others who aren't persistent, and others will genuinely dislike. I loved it; so many seemingly random and odd events occur, I wondered how it could ever come together. I thought it did so brilliantly, strangely enough partially with a tale from my childhood, constructed and performed by my parents for a college course. I liked the characters, particularly after Peter starts his new job. I giggle whenever I open the refrigerator and see t ...more
