In a usual high school setting where everything is supposed to be a big ol’ cliche, the author tried her best to make this a “not another high school”story but it is a “high school story” so inevitably, it totally reads like one. Only the focus of this one involves the forced “coming out” from the closet of our main protagonist Simon and the not so big reveal of his penpal, Blue.

I liked this one mainly because it’s an easy read. It’s predictable, but good predictable. I loved Simon’s character.

About an hour into this and I was thinking 4*. I'm not really a YA reader and sometimes the differences between YA and not YA are the things that push my rating to 5*. However, there was a point in the story where I became so entangled with the characters that I felt as though I was going to literally die if I did not find out who Blue was. This is just a lovely, gorgeous story. Simon, his friends, and Blue completely stole my heart from start to finish.

I really enjoyed this book. A near flawless execution of a bunch of very interesting high school kids and I loved it. An easy read, yet engaging and thought provoking -- it both feels like an important book and yet also highly entertaining. Its a lovely snap shot of the times we live in and a really good coming of age portrayal. There is a lot of loved about this book and think the author is a brilliant, talented writer. I definitely want to read more of her work (and was very nicely surprised t ...more

Michael Crouch is a great narrator for YA books. His voice has a young quality so he voices the characters well, and he is good at adding emotion to the scene. The book is great. I am a lover of m/m romance but I'm drawn lately to these YA LGBT, coming of age, discovering your sexuality stories. While some people don't come out or even discover who they are attracted to until later, most people figure it out in the high school years or sooner. And even though I'm an adult now, I feel like I can ...more
