I have always loved the character of Sherlock Holmes, but to my shame, I had never read any of Arthur Conan Doyle's books featuring this most famous of detectives. After watching the new modern day dramatisation of Sherlock from the BBC and loving it, I decided that it was more than past time that I got and read A Study in Scarlet for myself.

Aside from the really odd side story set in Utah with its indictment of Mormonism, this is actually an OK introduction to Sherlock Holmes in the collection. We get an introduction to the men, Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes, their world, and what kind mysteries Holmes is want to investigate. We meet Lestrade and, distantly, Mrs. Hudson (a character whose TV character has some really sharp opinions about in the Sherlock Christmas special since she never really gets to talk in the original stories) ...more

I read this last summer for the first time. But it was much better the second time around just because I was prepared for the detour into the American past the book took in the second half enough to really appreciate the second story for a complete story.
