Magic Breaks on Books On Track

Re-read: 1 Sept 2018:

A serious level up for Kate badassness, plus a very different future than the one they'd expected for her and her loved ones.

I'm loving this re-read and reading the books back to back lets me pick up clues that I'd completely missed when I first read the books. The series continues with a prequel scene and Dabwaha, Curran Twitter, a bribe scene before Magic Shifts.

Regina, AH, and I discussed this book and many others on Badass Book Reviews!

I know some fans have had mixed feelings about Magic Breaks, but I loved it! I really enjoyed the recap at the beginning (loved Barabas' voice!) and think it was perfect for new readers. Don't start here though; you'd miss out on so many fantastic stories in the previous books!

These books are always so funny, even when the characters are in life-and-death situations, and Magic Breaks was no exception. I was able to see Regina, AH, and I discussed this book and many others on Badass Book Reviews!

These books are always so funny, even when the characters are in life-and-death situations, and Magic Breaks was no exception. I was able to see Ilona and Gordon speak live last year and that same humor and wit come very naturally to them. Ilona is not Kate, but you could definitely hear Kate in her voice from time to time.

I loved Kate and Curran in this book. They've grown together and matured in their relationship and this book was the perfect demonstration of that. They support each other now without being too pushy and no one would call them co-dependent. I also appreciated that Kate had her time to shine alone as well. I think, with the fact that she was literally facing her daddy issues, it made sense for her to stand on her own for a lot of the book.

On the parenting issue, it was very intriguing to finally met Kate's father. I'm still not quite sure what to make of that situation, but it seems veeeeery interesting. Magic Breaks did not play out like I thought it would; it was so much better! And that is why I love the Andrews duo. They always add to the mythology with each book and it's amazing; I never know what to expect. I liked how we met another member of Kate's family in a completely unexpected way and learned a little bit more about where the power in her blood comes from.

Magic Breaks was wonderful throughout but the parts in Mishmar were the best! I admit I teared up a little bit when Kate saw her rag-tag band of saviors. The supporting cast was wonderful as usual. Andrea, Julie, Derek, and Doolittle are probably my favorites, but everyone adds something special to this series. I also have a newfound respect for Ghastek. There were some really sad moments in this book, some really happy ones, and an ending that will be taking this series in a completely new direction. I am so far on the Kate Daniels train that there is no getting off for me and I can't wait to see what happens at the next stop.

This book was nothing that I expected...yet having just finished I can't help but feel that it's everything that I wanted.

Although one particular arc has been addressed, it's not really finished. That's more realistic given all the tension that's been building up over the course of the series. Kate's world is complicated, just like the main character herself. I couldn't envision tying everything up in a big pretty bow and actually being satisfied. Seems the authors couldn't either.
