In Lord of Misrule, two vampire factions are fighting each other in order to gain control of Morganville, with Amelie heading up one group and Bishop heading up the other. However, whilst all of this is going on a group of humans decide to use the vampire’s distraction as a chance to fight back to try to win back control of their own town. Add to this rumours of a return appearance from Shane’s vampire-slayer father and a fierce tornado, and Morganville will be lucky to survive, and once again it is up to Claire to come to the rescue of her friends, family and the other residents of the town.

There is so much going on in this novel that at times it is difficult to catch your breath. Threats are thrown at Morganville from so many different angles that, although it became slightly unbelievable after a while, it does mean that there is so much action and intrigue that it is very difficult to put Lord of Misrule down. There are a few quiet moments whilst Claire and the residents of Morganville discuss strategy in their war with Bishop, but on the whole it is just non-stop, breath-taking action.

Morganville has been well and truly separated during the war between Amelie and Bishop and at times it is difficult to tell which vampire is on whose side. During this book Myrnin, who I previously had disliked, definitely started growing on me. Whenever he is sane, he has a great sense of humour and I just love the way he is so honest and forthright with his opinions. But by the end of the book I was back to my original opinion of him – I would not trust him as far as I could throw him!

There is a very dark feeling throughout Lord of Misrule brought about by a general feeling that ‘the end of the world is coming’. This adds a certain desperation to the actions of Claire and her friends which really dragged me into the story. It also helps to intensify the relationship between Claire and Shane – for Claire at least anyway. I am starting to find this relationship slightly frustrating for two reasons. Firstly, Shane seems to be incapable of telling Claire exactly how he feels about her. He obviously loves her as he will do anything to keep her safe, including putting himself in danger, but he just will not speak about his emotions. I realise that this is probably the way that most teenage boys would act in real life, but I can’t help wanting more from Shane on an emotional level, and more than once Claire voices this same frustration. Secondly, I am finding it more and more unbelievable that they haven’t become intimate with each other yet. They have been in a serious relationship for a few months and Shane keeps turning Claire down because of her age. I’m just not sure that this is how a boy of Shane’s age would act. I hope that these problems disappear for Shane and Claire in future books in the series as I love them as a couple and I really want things to work out for them.

Once again Rachel Caine, the queen of cliff-hanger endings, has left us with an ending that will ensure that everybody who reads Lord of Misrule will rush straight out to get a copy of Carpe Corpus. I know I can’t wait to see what happens next in Morganville! ...more

I must admit that I'm not really into the whole cliffhanger thing. Never have been, but I like how Caine does it in her books, it keeps me coming back for more (and regrettably spending more money! haha*)
Bishop has control of the town now, and everyone is trying to decide who's side who is on. Poor Claire is in the middle it seems.
Another good addition.
