Whilst this is the 6th book, it's the first one I've read of this series. And it left me with a cliffhanger! Luckily I've got the next one on hand, cause I'd heard about that.
It was slightly confusing (the world building behind the story, not the story itself) but the story carried the day.

This was a surprising twist to the Dark Ones series in that it was a to-be-continued ending. All the others in the series have been complete stories that have a happily-ever-after ending.
I wasn't planning on reading the next in the series right away, but after finishing this last night I decided I had to read the next book to find out what happens :) ...more
