4.5 stars. Anne Bishop creates a fantasy world with truly wild and frightening creatures (Others) who control much of the economic resources of the world and keep the humans under a tight control. They are fearsome and consider humans to be MEAT.

I found this series shortly after this first book was written (thanks, Mom!). When the second book came out I felt the need to re-read this one before I read it. And that's become what I do every year. This year the 5th book in the series comes out. So that makes this the 5th time I've read it. And it gets better every time! Meg and Simon make these books the wonderful things that they are, but they couldn't, quite, get there on their own. They have an incredible supporting cast. And I love each ...more

This was undoubtedly one of the best books I have ever read. It opens up a completely unique world. I have read so many paranormal romances which tended to blend together in the end, but this world does have a special setting.
I loved the developing of the characters you could see throughout the book.
I also love how Anne Bishop knows to include "sweet" moments when dealing with pups.
The Elementals were a wonderful touch.
